It occurred to me recently that my phone emoji library is somewhat a hilarious time capsule. If future anthropologists reviewed our digital footprint, they’d have a field day. Take the floppy disk (💾). For Gen Z, it simply means “save” (correct), but to those who grew up using them, it’s a throwback to 1999 and praying a floppy disk wouldn’t corrupt a term paper.
Then there’s the compact disk (💽/🎧). We use the emoji to represent "music," yet the device itself went from being relevant hardware, to a crispy antique, to a high-end accessory now being cherished by a new generation. It’s a full circle of analog-to-digital-to-analog. For my fellow Gen Xers and Millennials: when Gen Z “discovers” Doc Martens or Canon PowerShot cameras, they’re doing the heavy lifting by making our old stuff cool again. We’re not here to gate keep. It’s actually fun seeing my high school looks back in the wild. As L.P. Hartley said, “The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” We’ve been there and have the map. Sharing is caring.
