Imperfection Is the Universe’s Secret to Greatness. Leverage it!
I’m halfway through Peter Weir’s Project Hail Mary (same author as The Martian), and it inspired me to stop and look up space and gravity… 🕵🏻
Physicist Stephen Hawking once said, “The universe doesn’t allow perfection.” And he meant it, literally.
In it’s “infancy” (13.8 billion years ago, give or take), the universe wasn’t some perfectly smooth, flawless thing. It had tiny irregularities—microscopic bumps in energy and density. The imperfections were like a magic ingredient.
The bumps pulled matter together into clumps. Clumps formed stars. Stars formed galaxies. Galaxies spun out planets. And eventually, one blue planet got just chaotic enough to invent some of my favorite things, like art, music, and… life as we know it.
If the universe had been perfect—completely uniform—gravity wouldn’t have had anything to work with. No clumps. No stars. No life. Just one endlessly expanding cosmic soup.
So— my takeaway: imperfection can be a great starting point. Perfection is static; imperfection creates movement, change, and evolution.
Every rough draft, every awkward first attempt, every “oops” moment—those are our personal versions of the universe’s primordial quirks. They’re not mistakes to hide from; they’re catalysts for personal growth and breakthroughs.
What’s a project you’ve been waiting to start? Don’t wait until it’s perfect—start now, while there are still “clumps and stars forming”— where adventure and self-discovery start.
